deletion of intruder programs

somehow a piece of malicious adware for &quottuneup utilities' has insinuated it's way onto my system. I have tried to delete it via 'uninstall without luck. Initially it was a popup which suggested that I had a certain period to sign up for the service.
It displayed a supposed count of errors that it had located &amp asked me to run the program/ purchase. day after day I have not been able to get rid of it even though the supposed 'trial period' is over.
