Windows 8 Defender Problem

I have a brand new laptop with Windows 8. The windows defender keeps saying I have not scanned for a while yet I keep running a scan and it still comes back saying you have not scanned for some time despite the fact that it says the last scan was the
same day. This is really annoying. Any solutions?
