Windows defender will not update. It tells me there is a connection problem, but the internet is wor

When trying to update, I get an error message which states that there is an internet or connectivity error. When I try to use Windows repair system, it states that it is stopping 'bits' but when trying to start 'bits' it freezes. I can scan without any
problem, but now cannot update.
