Windows Media Player - no sound for videos

Windows Media Player 11 - will play videos (.MOD files) and DVDs but with NO AUDIO. It plays music (.mp3) files fine with sound, so I know the speakers work fine. PowerDVD program will play video and audio fine, but not Media Player (or RealPlayer for
that matter). I seem to remember having this sound problem before but was able to get it fixed, somehow. I had to reformat my computer over the winter though and am now having this sound issue again. I don't know if it is a codec problem or what, and if
it is a codec problem I have no idea how to fix it. I am using Windows XP, SP 3. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you.
