XP Home from 2004?

Old XP laptop crashed - got new hard-drive, installed XP from recovery discs. Tried to update XP. Windows Update said I needed to get IE8 as IE6 was reinstalled in recovery process. 16.1MB file downloads but nothing happens after? Update says I cannot install
service packs from IE6?

I had SP2 installed before the laptop crashed. I had not used this computer for a long time, no SP3? Not sure if SP1a was also installed?
