Windows Vista - BSOD ALL THE TIME!!! :(

B

beermeat783

Ok, heres the skinny... I decided to move to Vista 32-bit Business
(despite my conscience and intelligent notions in my head...) because
my work is going to be after SP1 is released, provided Vista is stable.
I put it on my desktop at work, not a single problem, and quite frankly
I am enjoying it. I decided to put it on at home... big mistake.

The following is a true re-enactment, some violence, coarse language
and suggested scenes shall follow. Viewer discretion is advised:

*beep*bop*beep*bop* (bonus points if you know the TV series haha)...

Ok, so first install, got to the end of the install, BSOD... not
impressed already. Decided "hey, might be a fluke accident"... thus try
again. Installed no problem on second attempt. Im thinking awesome, it's
working!... thought too soon, not more than 2 minutes into Vista and
explorer has crashed, attempting to restart application, everything
goes black... thus this follows:

"!@$# 1#$% ^@$% 1#$%$67 !@#$6" *kicks, thrashes, punches etc etc...*

Ok, simmered down, attempt #3, installed, comes up, hey, managed to
install 2 updates, 2 drivers this time... black screen, then blue
screen. Please repeat previous kicking, thrashing, punching etc etc...

Ok, finally, attempt 4, basically repeat of install #3, although I dont
even get to the drivers this time... back to XP Pro to make sure it is
functional, sure as hell is, but low and behold Vista decided to blow
away a separate partition that I didn't !#$@$% !$^5!$25 1#$ !%^ touch
and I lost all my music, pictures, movies and personal files... ALL
HAIL VISTA, SLAYER OF LIFE!

Ok, my system specs:

- AMD 64 5600+ Dual Core
- ASUS M2NPV-VM MoBo
- nVidia BFG 7900 OC
- 3 GB Corsair memory (2x1gb dual channel, 2x512mb dual channel (same
speeds))
- m-Audio Revolution 7.1, SoundBlasterLive Digital 5.1 (please note
both have been tried, m-Audio on #3 and SBL on #4)
- Logitech Keyboard and Mouse (G15 and a mouse with a crap load of
buttons)

Hope you enjoyed my rant/story... if anyone can suggest anything, I
would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Signed,

Bruised physically, mentally, and egotistically

Sounds like a hardware problem to me. Start with the memory use one stick at
a time. See if you still have a problem.

For starters, it would help if you told us what the stop error codes
are
for your BSOD's. Or, you can email me the last 2 or 3 *.dmp files for
the C:\Windows\Minidump folder and I'll try to dig up something.

I dont have the specific error stop codes, and I know being a tech I
shoudl have written them down... bad me. I am going to try the memory
pull, as well as disabling the onboard HD audio port, pulling the sound
card and see if there is any change. If the problem occurs again, I will
ensure to get the report file, and also write down any and all stop
error codes. I should be able to get a reply set up for you by
Wednesday or Thursday.

Install the 32 bit version of Vista on your 64 bit hardware. 64 bit drivers
are really slow in coming. Most 32 bit drivers are here now, or just around
the corner.

If you did try to install 32 bit Vista I would suggest that you have
hardware incompatibilities or a RAM problem.

Greetings, fellow Microsoft sufferer.

Well, the first thing that I would do would be to pull out all of the
cards (except the video card) and the 2 gig memory module and
re-install.

Next, pray.

If you do not get the BSOD, use it for a day and see if it remains
stable. If it does, then plug in a card or module one at a time to
see how things work.

Good luck!

You might have the specific stop error code if you check Event
Viewer>Windows Logs>System.

Type eventvwr.msc in run box>Windows Logs on left>System.

I want to thank everyone for their advice and such... it turned out to
be a combination of different things, and one thing I did not take into
account for...

Namely the memory I had, I found 1, and I quote only 1 forum board that
had a similar issue to mine, despite the manual stating the dual channel
memory being universally useable in configuration, a VERY specific
configuration works on different sized memory modules (mine being
2x512mb and 2x1gb), and only works with the new BETA Bios update. So
that was step 1.

Step 2, well, Vista doesnt like either of my sound cards, and gets
REALLY pissy if I have one of them in and the onboard enabled. I am
able to run the onboard stable if I do not have a sound card in, but my
SBLive card is no dice... and sadly, my beautiful m-Audio revolution
card which I have come to love so so so much, is no longer applicable
(unless they come out with a Vista driver).

Step 3, I had to install Windows as many of you mentioned, no
peripherals, all cards, out, secondary HDD disconnected, and it went
flawlessly. Since I had already lost everything, I completely low level
formatted both drives before proceeding to ensure a perfectly clean disk
to work off of...

So all in all *knocks on wood... literally* my computer is stable,
running Windows Vista Business - 32bit edition, and all is well.

So thank you all once again, this has been an absolute blast... and
finally, if anyone can recommend a price reasonable sound card that is
COMPATIBLE with Vista and has either a optical output, or a digital
coax, I would much appreciate it.
