Within the last couple releases of Windows updates for Server 2016, we have noticed a longer than usual load time of the windows start menu app (DesktopExperienceHost.exe). We have several applications that auto launch as soon as our Citrix desktop session loads. We use AppSense which detects a "desktop created" trigger that roughly matches up with the sihost.exe process of a user, this is what takes care of auto launching our applications. I have taken all the auto launch logic out of equation to test and the start menu still takes awhile to load. I did notice with all auto launch application logic removed, I was presented with a black screen before the eventual desktop background and start menu loaded.
At this point, we cannot go back to a time before the latest updates as we had even bigger issues with the start menu. We were getting the "Critical Error - Your Start menu isn't working. We'll try to fix it the next time you sign in." message along with a few cases of the start menu not functioning at all when clicked and throwing an error message in the event viewer.
We run Citrix 7.16 on the back end with a 7.17 VDA on the MCS servers (non persistent). OS Build 14393.2214, 5 vCPUs, 24GB of RAM. Server density is only about 8 users per server.
Any help is appreciated.
