Screen size too big for monitor

I had an old tv screen laying around, which I decided to hook up to my laptop to use as a second monitor. Because it is so old, it has a few issues. One of these is that the total size of the pixels on the screen exceeds the physical dimensions of the monitor. This means that a slight edge of the screen cannot be seen. I figure it might be possible to add a black border to the edge of the screen somewhere in the settings, however I have been unsuccessful. Is there a way to 'shrink' your screen size?
