Music skips

[Stan]

I posted this on windowsmedia.player board but don't know if I'll get an
answer there. So if you don't mind I'll try here.

Ten year old Gateway comp. but works fine.
Win 98SE, Plll 500 mHz, 256 RAM, Windows managed Swap,WMP 9.

CD ROM plays a music CD fine. When I "Copy from CD" to Media Library I
notice no skips but when I play from Media Library every song has at least
several skips and not just at the end of the track.
I'll add here that I had these same CD's in WMP9 about a year ago (had to
reformat) and they played fine then.

I recently had to change the CD ROM and had to put in and older, used one
it's only Quad speed.

Any ideas for a cure for this?

It can't be ten years old 'cos mine will be exactly 10 in 2
weeks and it's a PI 166 MMX bought with 95B, which was the
latest available at the time. But that is of course irrelevant
to your post.

Forget WMP9. WMP is hell, only to be used when nothing else will
play a WMx file. Not to mention putting WMP *9* on your machine
is really asking for it. Get 6.4 if you have to have WMP at all.

Get vlc, it will play almost anything, audio/video. For a tiny
mp3/CD player I recommend STP from www.tinyapps.com

A quad is fine, CDs in your stereo play at 1x. Why did you have
to change? You can get an old 4-12 CD drive for 5 dollars
anywhere.

The CD\DVD ROM that came with the comp. bit the dust. I had this old one
laying around.

You can get an old 4-12 CD drive for 5 dollars

your windows multi-media performance (not to be confused with
WMP) and causing these skips. Like some useless background
"system" program periodically, regularly or semi-regularly,
"popping up" (invisibly of course) using up 100% (or enough to
cause the skip, anyway) of the processor for a split second, or
something like that. I had a weird problem 5 years ago or so
where Windows, in its infinite wisdom, decided to "check"
whether there was a CD in the CD drive every two minutes or so
and it caused some continuous minor annoyance. I forget how I
fixed it.

You MIGHT end up having to do a reformat and reinstall. I highly
recommend partitioning, keeping JUST the system and program
files on C, and then getting Acronis True Image (the older
versions are the best) to make an image (and put it on a CD-R)
of a well-working drive for a 5-minute recovery from ANY
disaster.

Anyway, all the points mentioned in previous reply stand
regardless.

I'm trying to check on background apps and system monitor, during copying,
is pretty steady at 25% CPU usage.

Drive is partitioned with only OS on C: and I've used BING to make an image.

Sorry, I guess you know more than I gave you credit for (common
mistake, but its opposite is even more common).

Unless you already know about it, you might want to try a
program which I use, TaskInfo. It tells you about all running
threads, processes, all open files, etc. It gives very nice info
of processor and memory usage as well, and allows to kill tasks
(some of them c-a-d can not always do). www.iarsn.com

The new version is really complicated, I use TaskInfo2000.

It was one of the first, but there are now quite a few other
programs like it, in the "system utilities" sections of file
sites.

I usually have all that kind of stuff turned off to begin with
(like auto-play etc).

I really can't remember. (Ever since I've had Acronis T.I. I've
alllowed myself to forget a LOT of stuff). The closest I can
come to remembering is that MAYBE it had something to do with a
blank CDR in the tray. And that once I removed it, it stopped.
But I have had blank CD-R's in the tray since then and no
problem.

Old age, no fun. Computers, not much fun either.
