Windows Server Backup extremely slow while 'compacting the virtual hard disk(s)'

Hello *,

we are in the process migrating from Windows Server 2012 R2 to Windows Server 2016.

We use Windows Server Backup to backup about 4TB of data (files and three VMs) to an iSCSI disk.

On Windows Server 2012 R2 we have a 6TB volume for backup.

On Windows Server 2016 we have a 8TB volume for backup.

Windows Server 2016 Backup takes about twice as long as Windows Server 2012 R2 backup.

While on Windows Server 2012 R2 I hardly see the message 'compacting the virtual hard disk(s)' at all, Windows Server 2016 always displays 'compacting the virtual hard disk(s)'.

Even for an incremental backup it uses an excessive amount of time. I just (lol, sic!) triggered an incremental backup of about 3GB of data - which of course should not take a long time. 'Compacting the virtual hard disk(s)' took more than 5 hours to complete.

Is there any way to make Windows Server Backup on Server 2016 work like before?

/Klaus
