Understanding Server 2012 installation requirements

I am setting up a home lab environment for test/training. I want to two machines running Server 2012 R2 with the ability to RDP between them. I see ebay sales of server 2012 with COA, CAL, original hard drives .... and I am unclear what I will need to buy and the requirements to activate the machines and services.

This is for perhaps a years worth of time, and will never be a production machine. Is there a full function version that can be used for 6 to 12 months?
