Build 17661 fails to boot after upgrade

After upgrading to build 17661 from 17650 the computer fails to boot to Windows. I assume (but cannot confirm) that the upgrade completed successfully however the computer just hangs at the UEFI screen without booting into Windows.

This also happened after upgrading to 17655 however in that case it only happened after powering the computer down and then back up (see feedback log Feedback Hub - Windows Insider )

After Windows fails to boot, the repair options screen shows up and Automatic Startup Repair fails to repair anything. The log shows that it fails on step

"A recent driver installation or upgrade may be preventing the system from starting. Repair action: System files integrity check and repair" with error code 0x57.

Trying to start in safe mode has the same result - Windows doesn't move past the UEFI screen... Disabling secure boot has no effect either.

Restoring the previous version works and the computer boots correctly every time.

Some info on the PC:

Alienware X51 (first generation)

Intel i7-3770

16 GB RAM

Windows on SSD

BIOS version A14

Any idea what might be the cause of this issue?
