What is the magic fix for not being able to update successfully since Dec of last year?

Keep getting a message of a new update coming, have not been able to update since Dec, keep getting a restart needed or a corrupt database message. My laptop is at risk because I can not keep up with current updates, why can't Microsoft fix this problem?
