W98SE on dial-up suddenly has greyed out checkbox and doesn't store password

Hello,
Last week I found on my two dial-up accounts the checkbox "remember password"
greyed out. As work-around I fill in the password manually, an inconvenient
situation.
Any ideas how to repair this?

You can either make your password(s) shorter and simpler or get
a utility called shortkeys (lite is free).

In general, it is better not to have the machine automatically
put in passwords, so you should be grateful this happened.

Works OK for me
6. If the save box on the DUN screen is greyed out, this is generally an
indication that the Windows logon was not done or done properly, or that the
appropriate client (normally the Client for MS Networks or Microsoft Family
Logon) is not in the DUN configuration (Control Panel, Network).

7. With certain versions of DUN, you must interrupt the ISP connection in
order to enter the user name and password. To do this, open Explorer to the
DUN folder and left-click it once. On the toolbar, click Connections and
Settings. Place a mark in the "Prompt for Info" box. Once the DUN password
is saved, remove the mark from the "Prompt" box.

8. You must make an actual connection to your ISP before the DUN password
will save.

When you use the lousy web page interface to the newsgroups, you have to put
up with such nonsense. If you plan on using the MS newsgroups, I encourage
you to configure Outlook Express (or other newsreader) and connect directly
to the MS server: msnews.microsoft.com Then the links will work properly
and you will be able to easily find and track posts.

I understand --- I am on my Dad's computer and cannot use a newsgroup like
Outlook Express or Thunderbird or something else until my own computer is
fixed. I am ordering a replacement ASUS motherboard and a better Intel CPU.

Problem is solved.
After reading your tips I am aware of the relation
DUN password and Windows password in *.pwl file.

I extracted an undamaged *.pwl file from an GHOST image
and the checkbox is as it should be!

Problem solved.

After reading the articles you mentioned I am aware of the relation
DUN password and Windows *.pwl password.

I extracted an undamaged *.pwl file from an GHOST image
and the checkbox is as it should be!

Well, thanatoid, I am starting to realize that true security on a computer
that is connected on-line is an illusion. You must have an old computer like
I do which is an IBM 486 with Windows 3.1 and DOS 5 to be able to actually
get your work done without being concerned that the data might disappear. In
addition then the need to backup as frequently is not as great.

Very true. Privacy and security are all a part of history now.

I am close, I have a 166 MMX with 95B (which will be exactly 10
years old in about 10 days) and I have NO Microsoft products on
it except for the OS. It runs faster and better than XP and
Vista machines, I never have to update or patch anything (well,
I did tweak for years until I got the damn thing to work the way
I wanted it to) and I feel quite safe. (In ten years I only got
ONE virus - in an email from a clueless friend - and it couldn't
do anything anyway since I have long ago removed all scripting
and other nasty files from the win directory.) And I do not even
HAVE a .pwl file.

I DO have another 2GHz machine which I bought only because I got
tired of waiting 5 hrs for a 3-minute song to be converted from
wav to mp3 or vice versa. But that computer does not even have a
modem and is not networked. I just use CD-RW's. I have lots of
time.

Not sure what you mean by "disappear" in this context.

I shamefully admit I never do regular backups. I put stuff that
REALLY matters on CD-R's semi-regularly, but I never "back up"
most of my data. Anyway, I see the computer more as a time
killer device than anything else, but that's another story which
has to do my with my unfortunate personality and current life
status.

AFA the "system", ever since I have owned Acronis True Image I
have been spoiled to death and have probably forgotten how to
fix a lot of stuff, because whatever happens, in 5 minutes I am
back to a perfect setup.

The word "disappears" confused me. The data does not disappear,
it just gets copied to a place where it shouldn't be. And if
someone "steals your identity" then you certainly don't
"disappear", you are in fact kind of cloned, in a most
unpleasant sense! -)

But it is not really difficult to make sure it never happens.

Well, I suppose it COULD happen, but if a person is running a
decent firewall (I know everyone likes hardware fw's, but I have
a lowly 33.6 modem so I run a software one), doesn't use IE/OE,
has all scripting and other nasty files removed from win sys
etc., has file extensions enabled so they can see that "nasty
secretaries gangbang" is actually "nasty secretaries
gangbang.jpg.scr", NEVER opens ANYTHING except txt and images
without having scanned them for nasties, has NO pwl file, keeps
personal data (like my one and only credit card number) in a
weird directory or in a weird info storage program not on C, I
would say you are fairly safe.

I may have left out a couple of safeguards but you get the idea.

Oh, and needless to say, running XP or Vista is NOT a good idea.
For anyone, under any circumstances. Still, progress or death!
