windows 10 unable to delete files 'item not found'

I am trying to delete my folders before selling my laptop but there is a stubborn set of folders containing some pdf files which refuse to delete, claiming they no longer exist in the location where I have found them. I gather this is a common problem and there are several suggested fixes on the internet but none of them have worked for me. I am using Windows 10 with the most recent upgrade but the problem goes back several months. Surely there must be an answer for a bug as common as this seems to be?
