Today, 2018-05-26, after a visit to the Microsoft Store in Tysons Corner, Virginia to have them diagnose and fix my dead Surface Pro 3, they managed to resuscitate it by reinstalling Windows 10 64-bit. This model is the one with an Intel i7 CPU, 512GB SSD and 8GB of RAM.
Rather than spend the rest of the day waiting for Windows Update to finish downloading and installing dozens of updates, on advice of the Microsoft technical person, I closed the lid to put the device to sleep.
When I got home, I connected to my in home WiFi network and let the remaining updates download, install and specify "pending restart", which I fully understand why, thus it was no surprise.
When I click the power icon, the two major choices are "Update and Restart" and "Update and Shutdown".
No matter which choice I make, the computer does not perform any updates and simply restarts or shuts down.
The other curious thing is, when I go to Settings / Windows Update / the words "Windows Update" appears in large letters at the top of the screen, but the rest of the right-side of the screen is completely empty. No "View Update History", "Advanced Options" or "Change Active Hours". Just a totally white/blank right-side of the screen below the words "Windows Update".
Why does this happen? Are there "stuck updates"? How do I fix this?
