Windows 10 upgrade

My laptop upgraded to what appears to be a new version of Windows 10 on May 22. Once it downloaded I was no longer able to get Windows to open or get to the Start Menu. It is now at a reputable company trying to do a recovery. The tech said I was the 6th person to walk into their store in 2 days. Does Microsoft hold any responsibility for whatever this cost me or possibly having to purchase new Office programs? The upgrade happened while I was away from my laptop.
