Network between computers doesn't work

N

NT14_55

We used to be able to network the 2 computers in our home. We could share the printer, see and transfer files on the other computer, etc. That was before Windows 10. Now we are both on Windows 10, latest updates, and ever since we don't seem to have a network. Neither computer cannot access the other computer's files on File Explorer. We are unable to share the printer. (Unplugging the USB connection and replugging it to one computer or the other is getting very old.)

We are on a wi-fi connection and both computers can access the internet just fine. Both computers have Windows 10 Home, Version 1803. One has OS Build 17134.48 and the other has 17134.81 (6 days newer update).

Once again, this afternoon, we went through all the instructions Microsoft provides for sharing a printer. On the primary computer, the printer is shared. Both computers have network discovery and file and printer sharing turned on. When the second computer tries to add the device, it cannot be found. We've tried checking "old printer" -- still can't find anything. We've tried typing in the name of the printer (\\computername\printername) and that doesn't work either.

I don't know whether this is relevant or not, but after my computer (primary computer for printer) finished updating this morning, I was looking at what was new and tried out "Share a picture with a nearby device." "Photos" can see the names of 5 photo folders from the other computer (there are many more than 5) but when I click on any of those folders, it can't actually see any of the images. Earlier, it actually showed part of a photo as an image for each folder, but it's not doing that now.

My File Explorer lists the other computer on Network, but can't access it. Windows Network Diagnostics says "Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (DS-HP) is not responding." On the other computer, File Explorer does not list my computer on Network. When we run Windows Network Diagnostics on the other computer, it acknowledges there's a problem, but the message says it doesn't have enough information to diagnose the problem! That leaves us exactly nowhere!

We just tried a Network Reset on the other computer. Didn't make any difference. Any other ideas?
