Restoring a backup from an HP to an Acer

Hi, I've never backed up and restored a computer before, so forgive my lack of knowledge. I just received a new Acer laptop and have finished backing up everything I need from my old HP onto a hard drive, but I cannot figure out how to properly restore everything? I've attempted to search the web but I've had no luck with other forums. I don't know if I'm not understanding correctly or if there's a step missed or something. Anything would help, thanks!
