How can you stop an update?

My husband got the update and his computer spent 10 days at the microsoft store being fixed. My daughter got the update and spent hours on the phone getting things fixed. I have been saying later, later but just got two choices: restart now or restart tonight. I called in and was told there is no way to stop the update. So I guess tomorrow I have no computer?
