Virus infection undetected by Windows Defender

I have a pop up screen that appears as a "Audio Adjust" window with a flashing target line between Volume and mute. The cursor passes behind this window so there is no way to dismiss or identify the popup. I ran a full scan using Windows Defender but it reported no problems. How do I clear this popup?
