The update has installed successfully but the computer needs to be restarted
to complete, then when i do retart, it goes on and off a few times then a
baloon appears saying something along the lines of the update failed.

Have you tried the standalone installer for KB935807? Found here (for

Hi Carey

the link you gave us relates to versions up to XP, and not for Vista. I
tried installing it, but it fails, saying it is the wrong version.

Any other suggestions?

For KB929729, Try this:

(.NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 SYSTEM.WEB.DLL and MSCOREE.DLL Security
Update for Windows Vista)

Thanks dean-dean - it looks like the right link this time, but when I run it
the install bombs out at the install window stage (no message). Reboot does
not help, and the MS WindowsUpdate stays in place.

And when you go into Windows Update and check the code?

I tried that but it still wants to install the one from WU even though the
manually installed one seems to have installed ok.

Join the club !

I have tried installing through update, through stand-alone, running
stand-alone as Administrator and uninstalling 1.1 (it won't uninstall!) and
nothing works - all i get is the same error code 643.

There is a suggestion that as 3.0 is included in Vista, 1.1 is not needed -
anyone know if this is true ?

For anybody having issues applying this windows update, please try
this:
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PageIndex=2&SiteID=1&PostID=1848308

(Sorry to link another forum on this one, but it's a somewhat lengthy
guide)
For a quick summary, there are 2 removal tools, one is the windows
installer cleanup utility, this is a wonderful tool for lots of things,
try using that to get rid of .NET 1.1, and if that fails there is a
specific removal tool referenced above, or you can use:
http://dotnetcleanup.notlong.com

Once .NET 1.1 is fully removed, re-download it from microsoft.com, both
the .net framework and the service pack. Once they are both installed
the update should go in fine. It may be necessary to enter a clean
boot state to perform those steps.

Let me know if this works :)
