I am having a question about how to license Windows 2016 Server when installing over a hypervisor (Hyper-V Core, ESXi, XenServer, etc.).
So I understand the licensing of Windows Server 2016 is done by physical core of the processor, in my case the server has 2 physical processors with 4 cores each (total of 8 cores). Another point is that licensing Windows Server 2016 in the Standard version I am entitled to two virtual machines in Hyper-V.
My question is if I use a free hypersivor (Hyper-V Core, ESXi, XenServer, etc.) and license Windows Server 2016 in the Standard version (I'm considering licensing all 8 cores of my server), I can install two instances windows server 2016 in this hypersivor? Or, can I only install the two instances if it is on a Windows Server 2016?
See the image below for clarity.
