I need help why I can't create a storage pool

I'm trying to create a storage pool and I keep getting an error message stating that "Can't prepare files" Close all applications that are accessing the drive, and then try again. I don't have any files open when I'm trying to create a storage pool using my external hard drive. I would really appreciate any help. Thanks
