network credentials? 2018

I just got two new Dells with Windows 10 Pro. Got everything set up and tried to map a couple files for sharing on one computer from the other. It keeps prompting me for 'network credentials' but won't accept any password... one solution I read about is to start all over with recovery... needless to say I don't want to do this... does anyone have any fix that doesn't involve losing all my apps and settings?
