Activating windows on new hard drive

I replaced the hard drive in my laptop as it was about to crash. I realized after that I couldn't re-activate windows on the new hard drive because I didn't link my microsoft account to the old hard drive. I wanted to know is the only way to activate windows now is to switch the hard drives again and link my account to the old hard drive then replace the hard drive again with the new one.
