deleting old user account from laptop and lock screen

After attempting to delete an old user account using the family & other users section, the account is removed from this section but account name still appears on lock screen after laptop is shut down then restarted for new session later. I have tried multiple times with no success, with old account also re-appearing back in the family & others users section again.
