Windows 10 Ver 10.0.17134.48

I have a Dell Latitude laptop that since installing updates in April 2018, and the latest release a few days ago, has the sound disabled.

Hardware diagnostics shows the hardware is ok, booting from a LIVE distro of Ubuntu has sound working ok. Thinking it was initially the sound device (realtek) I purchased a USB sound device. Windows goes thru the motions of installing the device driver, but it too does not respond with sound

Symptoms

  • Sound icon in Systray is marked as muted
  • Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder services are both running
  • If I run "Troubleshoot sound problems" from right clicking the sound icon in Systray, it responds with "An error ocurred while troubleshooting" "An unexpected error has occurred. The troubleshooting wizard cant continue". Doing this generates an error in the event log Source = Application Error, Id = 1000, Category = (100) Faulting application name: sdiagnhost.exe, version: 10.0.17134.1, time stamp: 0xf19a53e3
