I have a Dell Latitude laptop that since installing updates in April 2018, and the latest release a few days ago, has the sound disabled.
Hardware diagnostics shows the hardware is ok, booting from a LIVE distro of Ubuntu has sound working ok. Thinking it was initially the sound device (realtek) I purchased a USB sound device. Windows goes thru the motions of installing the device driver, but it too does not respond with sound

Symptoms
- Sound icon in Systray is marked as muted
- Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder services are both running
- If I run "Troubleshoot sound problems" from right clicking the sound icon in Systray, it responds with "An error ocurred while troubleshooting" "An unexpected error has occurred. The troubleshooting wizard cant continue". - I have removed the device drivers for both, and allowed them to reinstall without any change in behviour
- I have downloaded drivers from Dell for the Realtek
- Tried the steps in Fix Sound Problems
