For several months I have had difficulty installing 1709 on my (WIN 10 1607) machine via download. Compatibility test says everything is OK ahead of download and install.
1> System reboots after install to the log on screen showing my user and space for password.... "momentarily" and then screen goes black except for the mouse pointer. Since my log on password is not set up I am assuming the computer has automatically shifted to the normal WIN 10 desktop which is replaced with the black screen (except for the white mouse pointer).
2> From the black screen, a Ctrl-Alt-Del will then give me the normal option list (lock; switch user; task manager, sign out, etc.) in the normal blue background and start button in the lower right hand corner with restart and shutdown option. Clicking any of the options on the list results in a black screen again with the mouse pointer still visible.
3> Holding "shift key" and clicking restart in the lower right hand corner reboots the computer into the Windows Recovery Environment. Trouble Shooting shows everything is OK.
4> I try the same procedure several times (Definition of Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result!!) Same problem.
5> I revert back to 1607 from the Recovery Environment and everything is fine except system wants to install the1709 update again because the download must still be on my system and I cannot delay except by shutting down computer and using my laptop.
Questions:
A. Can I go directly from 1607 directly to 1803 to "maybe" get over this hurdle?
B. Window's Update either sometimes shows that my system is up to date or sometimes kicks me into the 1709 update. Choosing "Learn how to get the Creator's 1803" bounces me right to Microsoft. Then choosing the "Update option" on the MS website takes me right back to MY computer "Check for Updates" screen.
B. From the forum, I understand that the Media Creation Tool is the way to go. However can I use the Media Tool and "update" with 1803 WITHOUT having to reload all my apps, etc. much the same as if the computer were updated via download? On the forum I often see that "update" and "upgrade" are sometimes used interchangeably and I am confused as to how the Tool is meant to be used. I would like to exhaust all possibilities and not have to do a clean install if at all possible.
