See this discussion: http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=29171

The Automatic Update /service/ has nothing to do with Automatic Updates
settings.

Yes, but see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/224420. The Windows Critical
Update Notification utility could be installed in Win98 to notify the user
of available updates. Note that it does/did not /install/ any updates.

That's scary, but it's part & parcel of regular XP/Vista-irradiation-- &
nothing else! It WON'T happen on our Win98 machines, except I do know my
ISP (Internet Service Provider), NetZero, will do it-- & not just to
update phone numbers! I'm fairly sure my Kerio Personal Firewall has
complained once/twice about the signature having changed on NetZero's
main executable Exec.exe! Also, it takes in new ad's & URLs for its
mini-TV to show during the logon process!

Thanks Robear. I remember that I hated that critical update notification
because it was set at least in my system to check every 5 minutes for
critical updates and when I changed the time for it to check it would revert
to the previous 5 minute setting after a shutdown and reboot of the computer.
I for one unistalled this update and did not miss it at all since I check
for updates manually at least weekly.

Please elaborate on your statement if you like, Robear. Thanks in advance.
Have a nice day. (I like that last sentence but think I will use . instead

Well, I prefer os to let you know about what they are doing. Chris Quirke,
MVP is consider having an underlying maintenance operating system of Linux to
help support Vista. His blog on this is really interesting to me at least.

I've misplaced my tinfoil hat & cannot click a Vista blog until I find
it. But you are right about stealth updates. I guess, in my case with
NetZero, I have no choice in any event but to trust them. Stealth
updates or otherwise, I must always have Exec.exe running in here when

Good PCR --- you should consider doing what I do and have a computer that is
not net enabled like my good old 486 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It has MS-DOS
5 and Windows 3.1 and I still use it and especially now since my dual-boot
custom built and upgraded from a gaming PC is down for the count at least for
a while. <grin> I am enjoying playing old games like Zeliard again and it
is so nice with the Roland MT-32 music card that my now deceased grandmother
Nana bought me in the 1980's. The music card was over $700 but I feel it was
well worth it since it still brings me so much happiness today playing the
old DOS and Windows 3.1 games that were mainly from Sierra in my game
collection. The majority of the games are stored in the basement in boxes
but it is great to pull them out and play them on a real PC that was written
for consumers and has a real maintenance operating system unlike NT (New
Technology), 2000, XP Home/Professional, and Vista. My Linux and Apple days
are fast approaching due to the continued foolishness of Microsoft in trying
to save some money by not having the 9x consumer source code continued. Now
you know Gary S. Terhune will be upset with me because I broke my word about
not mentioning the greatness and desire for another 9x operating system. In
addition, think of the children who need to be educated with the older
software that was written for DOS and Windows 3.1 that will not run on XP or
Vista. It would be nice if someone would listen to me for once. Painted Sky
Elementary removed the 98 Second Edition PC's this summer for only XP
Professional PC's with remote access enabled while I was gone for 3 months
and look what happened to them. My Windows ME PC there that had a hardware
glitch preventing it from shutting down properly was the only 9x PC left in
the place. <!>

The first one was from a church rummage sale, and I got everything including
monitor, keyboard, EVERYTHING for $10. It had a P24T Pentium Overdrive® @
100MHz, and 16MB RAM. Also a 28.8 modem with W98SE. I had it on the
Internet too.

This machine I got from my mother when she upgraded to a blazing fast new
machine. It has an AMD K6-2 @ 500MHz 384MB RAM, and a 56K modem. Oh, I
can't forget about the 17" monitor. My old machine only had a 14"--wow,
what a difference. I've got a DSL hookup right now. So this machine I got
for free. It originally shipped from Compaq with W98SE, but she had a HD
failure, and by the time I got it it had XP Pro. I still have my W98SE CD
from the machine before this, and someday when I get ambitious I may set up
to dual boot. Only problem is that my wireless router will not work on W98,
so I'd have to go back to dial-up.

Thanks for the response, Curt. So there is no way to get wireless in 98
Second Edition even if the motherboard supports it---- right --- just want to
make sure on this point.

I honestly don't think it's a matter of mobo support. My wireless adapter
is USB for one thing, and the specifications list XP as a minimum
requirement. I still think (although I haven't researched it) that there
may be wireless setups out there where 98SE would work though.

You can use wireless on '98, if you can find drivers for it. I have two
laptops here, one running W98SE, and one running W95 (OSR2), both with a
