Bitlocker with a USB Key

Googling this is giving me all kinds of conflicting answers. They alll seem to be dependant on when the question was asked, so I'm assuming things have changed in the last few years.

So, if i encrypt a non-TPM machine with Bitlocker and choose to save the key to a USB, do i need to separate the USB from the machine other than on bootup? Logically it sounds like 'yes' because the usb could be used with the drive to break the encryption if the unit is stolen. But I'm seeing more information where the USB is somehow encrypted and secure.

The question is, with Windows 10 Bitlocker, if i steal an encrypted hard drive and the USB from a non-TPM enabled machine, can I decrypt the data? can you send me to a link explaining that as such? I'm seeing all kinds of opinions but no real facts.

thanks for any help!
