Upgraded system hardware, windows deactivated. Purchased DVD version of windows 10, but product key will not work to activate.

I upgraded my entire system with the exception of my HDD, windows booted up, but became deactivated. So I purchased a windows 10 dvd, chose to download all updates and install, but retain old files. Windows 10 is not activated, and it will not except my product key.
