**Why Windows 10 won't run your games and other various learnings and ventings

For nigh onto two years now, I've ****, searched, screamed, tried every compatibility setting, I've googled, I've binged, I've posted to the community all trying to get my games that worked on Windows 7 to work on Windows 10.

I was reading an unrelated answer to a Quora question when I saw what I'd been looking for. The reason my games no longer function. Turns out Microsoft intentionally disabled them but didn't have the decency to tell us. I can't tell you how long I screwed with "Compatibility Mode" and its troubleshooter, etc. Never once did anything tell me, "Hey fool you can't use programs from CDs or DVDs anymore".

So in my case I have two computers, a desktop I built with Windows 7 that worked just fine and a laptop that came with Windows 8.1 which might have worked but since they played 52-card pickup with the functions I've always used it was a bloody nightmare to do even simple things.

I readily agreed to update to Windows 10 on my laptop. Initially I was quite pleased. However, as the updates have been installed features have stopped working, I can no longer control when my computer goes to sleep, it took me two weeks to figure out a way to prevent my computer from going to sleep every three minutes. I don't use my microphone but I found that if I kept Dragon running in the background the laptop didn't go to sleep. I figure one or two more updates and it will be completely non-functional.

I DID NOT agree to convert my Windows 7 computer to Windows 10. I paid very careful attention to all the pop-up windows to ensure I selected the proper option to NOT install. One morning I got up and my desktop was running Windows 10. Guess what? Any programs or software I used that I did originally get from a digital download didn't work any more. As I stated above I've spent the better part of two years trying to get any of them to run. I wouldn't be nearly as upset if one, they'd told me they were removing support for non-digital download software. But preferably, I would rather they have left my computer alone.

Now I have my start button, but on the list are items that failed to install properly, they show up in the uninstall window but cannot be uninstall, probably because they didn't install to begin with.

Also in the menu from the start button are a number of apps that I either do not want, cannot use, or cannot even figure out what they do. Every time I try to save a spreadsheet or word document the highlighted location is OneDrive which I will NEVER use. I've tried repeatedly to remove it from my lists but to no success.

Now we have Cortana spying on us 24/7. Many people will react to that statement by dismissing me as a crackpot or a jerk, or an idiot. Think about this, you can have your computer locked and say "Hey Cortana" and it will respond. It cannot do this unless it's listening to the microphone all the time. You say, oh they wouldn't do that. I've read of at least two cases where Alexa, Amazon's version of Cortana, has recorded entire conversations that were private and not for public consumption, then sent the entire conversation to a random person on their contact list. The people recorded only found out when their friend called them to ask why they had sent them the recording.

As for updates, my laptop is now running an old build because the newest build disable peripherals (Please don't tell me to update my drivers or run things as the Administrator). Now on a daily basis I get a warning that my virus definitions in Windows Defender are out of date.

The real shame of the matter is there's not one thing I can do about it. Microsoft is so big and powerful it doesn't matter to them one damn bit how much trouble they cause me.

People say, oh well post feedback on the feedback hub. I've posted or upvoted a total of 132 times to date. So far only 12 of those feedback entries have received any MS response at all. There are feedback entries on my list with as many as 32,814 upvotes with NO response, followed by 2,049, then 356, then 328, then 251, then 128 twice, then 127... you get the idea. Then mysteriously there's one with 76 upvotes with a response, then very puzzlingly there's one with only 3 upvotes. Oddly enough the title is "I HATE MICROSOFT" (in all caps). The response was apparently intended for a completely different thread because it makes no sense whatsoever.

In general, if they've created a technical problem for you, you are ignored; if you complain about Edge they insist, "if you just try it again we are sure you'll love it". If you complain about Cortana or OneDrive or other apps you are again ignored.

At one point I resorted to contacting MS's technical support for help. The tech got my name and phone number in case we got disconnected, then he said he'd roll my laptop back to a previous build. Then he promptly disconnected and I never heard from him again, my computer hadn't rebooted or anything else that might have caused it on my side.
