Hi there.
The issue I faced is very similar to the one described in the following tread: Windows Server 2012 Failing update 0x800F0922: 2018-01 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows Server 2012 for x64-based Systems (KB4056896).
January 2018 monthly quality rollup update for Windows Server 2012 R2 (KB4056895) and the following Preview of Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows Server 212 R2 from 17.01.2018 (KB4057401) failed to install on several Windows Server 2012 R2 standard virtual servers with the same error 800F0922.
The hyper-v hosts are also based on Windows Server 2012 R2 but I didn't risk to update them in January yet.
There is a message after reboot: "We couldn't complete the updates. Undoing changes".
I've tried to download these updates as standalone files and I used WSUS to install them with the same result.
Registry keys required to install the updates were automatically created by updated antivirus software.
SFC and DISM found no corruption in any of the servers.
Software distribution folder cleanup didn't help.
Any other updates installed without a scratch.
The error in System log is as following:
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800F0922: 2018-01 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows Server 2012 R2 for x64-based Systems (KB4056895).
There are the following warnings in the WindowsUpdate log (that's not a complete log, but just copied messages.):
WARNING: Failed to get Wu Exemption info from NLM, assuming not exempt, error = 0x80240037
WARNING: Failed to get Network Cost info from NLM, assuming network is NOT metered, error = 0x80240037
WARNING: Could not enable auto-logon after next reboot (hr=0x00000000, ntstatus=0xc00704ec).
Failed to enable auto-logon after WU reboot - hr = 0xD00704EC
WARNING: Network Cost is assumed to be not supported as something failed with trying to get handles to wcmapi.dll
WARNING: Failed to initialize event uploader for new server {3DA21691-E39D-4DA6-8A4B-B43877BCB1B7} with hr = 8024043d.
Attempt 1 to obtain post-reboot results for event with cookie 30643435_2683046274.
Post-reboot status for session 30643435_2683046274: 0x800f0922.
WARNING: Post-reboot install failure, error = 0x800F0922
Any ideas how to solve the situation without doing much harm to production servers would be welcome.
Thanks.
Evgeny.
