I have a Windows 2016 Essentials server running on a Dell T130 with RAID 1. I have about 18 client machines running a mix of Windows 7, 8 and 10 professional. The issue I have is that after an undetermined amount of time, and this time varies throughout the day, the client machines will drop their mapped drives and loose internet from anywhere between 20 seconds to several hours with most only lasting about 1-2 minutes or less. Sometimes several reboots will bring it all back and sometimes a simple log off/sign out and back on will bring it all back and sometimes it takes up to 3 or 4 tries before it all comes back. When this happens, I can ping the server IP but can't ping www.google.com or any other domain name. I get errors when clicking on the drive mappings stating that the drives are no longer accessible to check the name and try again. When I run ipconfig /all I have an IP address on the client machine with the proper gateway and DNS server IP's listed. The server is configured to be my DNS server and DHCP server.
Here is what I have tried. I have tried both NICs on the server with the same result. I have one NIC disabled, the one not being used. I have on the advice of phone support with Microsoft added or modified 2 registry entries in the Lanman settings, 1 for autodisconnect changed to FFFFFFFF and the other KeepConnected and set it to 600 decimal. I have rebuilt the server from scratch. I have done an inplace upgrade and still the problem persists. I have replaced the router to our internet service provider and our switch and still the problem persists. Microsoft's phone support has not been much help either, when they call. They can't seem to see an issue here.
It seems to me the problem is with DNS somewhere as sometimes when I click on the drive mappings I get a message about the name can't be found or doesn't exist, which I know to be a lie as it does work sometimes. There has been nothing new added to the network other than the router and the switch which were replaced in an effort to resolve this issue and the server is new as well. Other then those 3 items, there is nothing new or changed about the network or on the network.
This has been going on for a month now and I need to get it resolved, so if you have any other ideas or suggestions, please send them my way as I'm pulling what hair I have left OUT!
