Upgrading from Windows 10 Pro running Windows 1607 on an old Toshiba laptop when trying to update 1709 or 1803 my network adapters stop working

This is the device drivers at 1607




and this is the device drivers post upgrade




as can be seen the adapters stop working after the upgrade. Anyone else got this problem? The drivers are till in Windows/System32/Drivers after the upgrade so it is clearly not something simple!
