Well... it depends - it is hard to tell which one is the best. Here is a
list of a/v programs:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_antivirus_software

From that list, McAfee VirusScan, Norton AntiVirus, Trend Micro Antivirus
are maybe the most popular.

Since you ask for a totally subjective answer, here's mine: NOD32 and
Kaspersky (in that order).

Hi Smorebucks,

I will not tell you which one you should buy or use, other people have given
you already some choises.

A virusscanner is only good if you keep it up to date! Protecting your
system is not just a matter of installing a Virusscanner and a firewall.

Keep your system up to date with all (not just Microsoft) security updates.
Use common sense when opening mail attachments and clicking on links in
email and webpages.
Do not leave your email address on every website that asks for it, doing so
will probably only increas the amount of spam you will receive.
Get to know your system so you will notify sooner if "something" is going
on.

If you are infected, scan your system with other online scanners for double
checking.

Hope this helps,

I find NOD32 to be very good (up to date) smallest footprint and lowest
impact on system

As a developer and video editor I recommend this one without hesitation

Prevention is your best bet. Practice safe-hex. Use a secure e-mail
client and browser. Use a router with built-in firewall. Make sure
the Anti-Virus and Anti-Spware scanners you get have real-time
scanning. I have some listed on my pages below.
