Windows 8.1 free upgrade

I have a Windows 8 laptop, and I keep getting prompts to upgrade to windows 8.1 for free. I have however heard that one cannot use a Windows 8 key with windows 8.1 and therefore I will in fact have to purchase a Windows 8.1 Key if I upgrade. Can someone please advise me whether I will need to purchase a Windows 8.1 key if I upgrade?
