How do i make sure the jumper switches are set properly?

Please help me set the jumper switches so we can work between two computers,
to test a muddled hard drive and to restore the Hard drive and lost files.

A. Look at the diagram on the back of the drive.

B. Look at the diagram in the drive's data sheet

C. Look at the diagram at the drive manufacturer's site

I can go online I guess to check the manufacturer's information. I don't
know about a data sheet for the HD.

I presume you mean the switches will be located on the PC that is working
correctly?

I don't even know what the switches look like yet.

Hope it isn't too hard to find.

Meredith, the reference is to the jumper(s) on the hard drive, itself. It
may need changed from MASTER to SLAVE.

There may be other associated issues which must be checked or dealt with,
such as BIOS settings, cable connectors, power supplies, potential
proprietary aspects, compatible operating/file systems, boot managers and
overlays.

Please provide the group with some basic information, like:

1. the make and models of the computers in question [the *bad computer* and
the *good test computer*]..

2. the installed operating systems for each.

3. the errors or other which are making you think you have hard drive
difficulties

There are two areas on the back of a drive that have several small
pins (about the diameter of a straight pin).

One group of pins is for the power supply plug... in has fewer and
heavier pins.

The other group of pins is for the jumper. The pins are in two rows,
top and bottom. Maybe 6 (?) in each row. Near them there will be a
diagram showing how to set the jumper to make the drive Master, Slave
or (maybe) Cable Select. The jumper itself is a small plastic gizmo
maybe 1/8" square. If the drive is not already jumpered as you wish,
just pull off the jumper and put it on the correct set of pins as per
the diagram. Tweezers are helpful in removing/placing the jumper.

Everyone here is assuming you have an ide/PATA hard drive. Hard drive
jumpers are on the rear. Well, at least the pins are. Depending on the
make, the jumper may be removed in some cases if its the only hard drive on
the original ribbon cable as master. If not noted on the label on the hard
drive, the jumper settings can usually be located at the hard drive
manufacturer's website.

Things can be interestingly destructive if:
1. 2 older PC's with different bios, and different or vaguely different
interpretation of the same hard drive.

Inaccessible or hard drive not recognized:
If one hard drive is a western digital and one is a maxtor manufacturer.
Doesn't have to be on the same ribbon cable.

Ok thanks everyone. Looks like I ve got a bit of investigating to do.
I will print out all the advice and try to work thru it methodically.

I know the really old PC is a Western not sure what the recent one is. The
old one boots up ok and we have loaded recovery file software to see if we
can get it to work with the muddled one maybe restore everything.

Ahh the joys of modern technology.

Be aware that Western Digital drives have slightly different jumper setting
standards than other brands. They have an extra setting called Single, in addition
to Master, Slave, and Cable Select.
They use Master when the drive is the master on a channel that has another hard
drive connected Slave when the drive is on a channel with no other hard drive
Cable Select, which allows the setting to be sensed by how the cable is connected
and Single, when there is no other hard drive attached to that channel at all.

Most other brands use the Master setting for both scenarios where Western Digital
would use either Master or Single, depending on the physical configuration.

The WD jumper slave setting can be used in tandem with a master on the same
ribbon cable, or alone on the ribbon cable (generally not recommended).

That is obviously incorrect and an example of my fingers getting ahead of my mind,
or vice versa.

What I meant to write is:
They use Master when the drive is the master on a channel that has another hard
drive connected Slave when the drive is the slave on a channel with with another
drive as master Cable Select, which allows the setting to be sensed by how the
cable is connected and Single, when there is no other hard drive attached to that
channel at all.
