My OS is Window 8. I am always getting prompt to install updates for Window 8.1. Will it upgrade to OS 8.1 ?

1. I am always getting prompt to install updates for Windows 8.1"it is free" I don't understand whether it will upgrade the existing window 8 to OS Windows 8.1 or simply install updates relating to 8.1 published in different times? Local technicians say, this will cause problem to different drivers. Is it correct? Further they say, by upgrading Window 8 to 8.1 will not work properly. What is your opinion?

2. If up gradation is possible and works properly then how?
