Windows 8 Activation Error

I bought a brand new PC, I decided I wanted to install Windows 8, then upgrade to Windows 10, but whenever I write my product key in the box then hit enter, it reports with "We couldn't verify the product key. Please check your installation media." What does it mean and how do I fix it?
