DVD & CD drives

Both my drives aren't recognizing the CDs I put into them. When I go into
Device Manager though there are no open devices, all +'s. Do I need to use
the drivers that came with the devices to get these drives working properly?
I'm using Windows 98 SE.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Background information would be helpful.

1. What make and model of computer, or if home built, the motherboard.

2. What make and model of CD/DVD drives.

3. Does Device Manager show the generic drives as installed for both drives,
and as what.

4. Are all updates presently installed.

5. Did these drives work before, if so, did both stop working at the same
time.

6. Are the disks, manufacturer, or, individual, created.

7. What burning software(s) do you have installed.

8. If data CDs/disks, what is the extension for the files you are trying to
access.

Standard cure is:
1. Via / Control Panel / System / Device Manager, remove
the drive(s) and reboot.
2. If the drive(s) is operable, Win98 ought to
recognize it as "new" hardware and either
instal correct Windows drives (likely) or prompt
you to supply a CD with drivers.

If this fails, post details here.
