Insert .Net 3.5 into Server 2016 WIM/VHD

How do you insert .Net 3.5 into a Windows Server 2016 WIM/VHD so that it is available to install as a role without needing to specify an external source?

Is it as simple as copying the "ondemand" cab file to the correct location in the WIM/VHD?
