So I'm finding out that Microsoft has moved to a "core-only" upgrade model for Windows Server 2016. (this seems to explain why our servers haven't been upgraded past the 14xxx build). I have a few concerns about this and wanted to reach out to the community for some insight.
For most of our core services (pun intended perhaps?) running server core will not be a big issue. We are familiar with PowerShell and management tools that we can get away with core on things like AD, IIS, File Servers, etc. However, what about installing things that are not part of Windows directly? For example, how does one install SQL Server without GUI or what about line-of-business applications or our PBX solution? If we are to ensure we stay up-to-date we are going to have to move to 1803 soon. I just don't know how it's going to work for these non-Microsoft server applications if we don't have any GUI support.
