Accessing W98 files and printers in a wireless network

A

Adrian

Previously my network (containing a W98) was wired. I have changed to
wireless. I am able to access email and internet alright form the W98, but
how do I make files and printers of the W98 accessible by other boxes in the
wireless network? When the W98 was hard-wired up there was no problem in
doing that, however, now being wirelessed up, I cannot solve the access
problem.

"Control Panel, Network, Configuration tab, File & Print Sharing button"
Did you put a check into the two boxes there?

I am using a Belkin Range Extender / Access Point because I did not want to
change my current router + modem combination, the reason being that I also
have telephone via the ISP. I have the setup (two pcs (XP and Vista)
connected to a third (W98 box with big disk)) up and running wireless, but
there are hicks and tricks that I cannot get my finger behind with respect
to getting the W98 box communicating properly wireless (*). There does not
seem to be any consistent causality. I have reinstalled W98 and have
reinstalled the wireless network adaptor of Belkin. Once it is running it
seems to be alright. Don't know if the connection will prove to be stable
yet. Anyone got experience with Belkin and the sort of configuration I am
working with, who could shed some light on the faltering wireless
communication between the W98 box and the Belkin Range Extender Cum Access
Point?

Many thanks,
Adrian.

(*) Problem: after powering up the W98 box, a connection (W98 / Adapter) is
established, according to Belkin connection software. It indicates that the
signal is ok and that the link is ok. Nevertheless Internet is inaccessible
from the W98 box, as are the other PCs in the network (inaccessible from the
W98 box). At the same time the XP and the Vista can access the Internet
alright, but to both the W98 box isn't visible. Then I muck about with just
about everything, and bingo, problem solved. As I said above, any causality
between what I have done and the result completely eludes me.

If there is any consistency at all with respect to my trials to get the W98
box wirelissing properly it is after the box has been switched off and is
powered up again.

When you don't have connection, does it help to execute

winipcfg /renew

from a command prompt on the W98 box?

Hi Ingeborg,

Thank you for your suggestion. I won't be able to test it right now, but I
will. Have a nice weekend.

I am now running the Belkin adapter with Belkin software. Is there an
alternative for the Belkin software, assuming their driver remains in place?
The point is that the connection with the access point is problem free on my
XP and my Vista, so it doesn't seem to be the access point per se, but the
adapter (software) in combination with W98. Is there alternative software
available - either part of W98 or downloadable?

UNLESS, you have completely diagnosed the issue and confined such
specifically to the Belkin driver, OR if the driver was NOT created for the
9X OS, likely your issues are not related directly to the drivers.

There are a number of potential issues ranging from the wrong or
conflicting IP addressing and or protocol version to browser conflicts to
firewall issues to security issues/settings to ..., well, you get the idea
I hope.

Perhaps it would help if the group first received some basic network
information.

Please post the results from:

1. In XP and VISTA:
from the run box "cmd ipconfig /all"

2. In 98:
from the run box "winipcfg", posting the Belkin, local network, and
*phone/modem* {if applicable}, TCP/IP adapter settings.

Also, it would be instrumental to know what security protocol [none, MAC,
WEP, WPA, etc.] you are using.

Yikes! I can see you've done a lot already-- & that I never should have

looks like MEB has more, & I know Brian A. has experience with it too.
Good luck! I'm glad to see you've got it working intermittently at
least!

It gives
1. the adapter address
2. ip address
3. subnet mask
4. defaukt gateway

I am unsure whether it is a good idea to have that information on apublic
display.

The Default Gateway is the IP address* of the router to which the Access
Point is connected.
The IP address is the same* except for the last character combination (after
the last dot).

TCP/IP Properties Tabs:
DNS Configureation: Disable DNS
Gayeway: no data is entered to the fields
WINS configuration: no data is entered to the fields
IP address: obtain IP automatically
Bindings: Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer Shariing for
Microsofdt Networks, Microsoft Family Logon - are ticked
Advanced: Allow binding to ATM Value = No
NetBIOS: shadowed out

I had typed a response to your postings, but as I have no personal knowledge
of your wireless *repeater* configuration [Belkin Range Extender / Access
Point], perhaps this is more helpful. You have what amounts to multiple
routers involved.

You would likely have more luck in * microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web
* which would be a more appropriate discussion group.
NOTE though, they are likely to also request your network configuration for
diagnosis. When posting there, condense your postings from this group into
one informative post, rather than exposing bits and pieces as you go.

Might want to check out the second link below and see if it might help.

Hi, I think I will give up on the Win 98 + Belkin combination. I simply
cannot get it to work. I have checked out a source on the Internet which
specifies how the settings should be - I had them all correct, so it would
seem a lost battle. I will probably transfer to an XPP. I threw out the
Belkin software on my XPP as well and am using the XPP software for the
connection. I have lost faith in Belkin.

Many thanks,
Adrian.
