Change startup programs - Error 0x80070002

S

Scott Kuhn

Hi,
I have Windows Vista Business. When I go to the Control Panel and choose
Change startup programs under Programs I get the following error in a dialog
box titled Windows Defender:

Application failed to initialize: 0x80070002.

Now, does this have anything to do with Live One Care? Do I need to update
defender? I haven't found any previous posts with this specific issue.
Thanks.

Hi, Scott.

Error code 0x80070002 means "file not found". Did you upgrade to Vista from
Windows XP? Was Windows Defender installed before the upgrade?

First of all, take a look at this KB article:

Error message when you try to start Windows Defender on a computer that you
recently upgraded to Windows Vista: "Application failed to initialize"

Doesn't Live OneCare disable Windows Defender?

I installed both Defender and OneCare in a test system and I got the message
"Windows Defender is disabled", so yes, OneCare disables Windows Defender.

AND OneCare disables (and substitutes it's own) firewall.

So, if the Change Startup programs feature of Vista is dependent on Defender,
but Live One Care disables Defender then why the HECK doesn't Vista recognize
that and provide a different feature, or use live one care?

If you are telling me that I cannot use the Change Startup Programs feature
because Live One Care disables it and provides no other facility for it then
why would anyone use Live One Care? If this is truly accurate I'll have to
consider not using Live One Care. Nice job MS....

An alternative to Change Startup Programs in Defender, should you decide to
keep OneCare, is System Configuration under Start
Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools.
