Server 2012 Purge Backups?

I have a Server 2012. Windows Server Backup is being used to backup to an external HDD. Currently there are 512 copies of the backup. Having so many copies of the backup, will this lessen the chance of a successful restore? Should I delete/purge the backups on a regular basis? What are your thoughts on this?
