Automatic maintenance hogging CPU

Our server rebooted last night and I've noticed automatic maintenance started, refuses to stop, and is hogging a ton of CPU resource. I restarted the server again only to have the task start within 5 mins. Is there a way to cancel this process easily? Why does it keep starting as soon as we reboot?
