Windows 2012 console problem - "Please Wait" RDP works fine

I have a Windows 2012R2 Domain Controller that is stuck on the "Please Wait" screen and it has been left for WEEKS and still will not progress on to the logon screen. However, if I RDP on to the server, I get logged in okay and everything looks to be fine. I think this happened as a result of a windows update (or pending update).

Also when I look at installed updates it says that "No updates are installed on this computer"


Any suggestions appreciated.
