Keyboard quote marks

[Ed Meza]

When I wish to write a word(s) in quotes - be single or double quotes, I
have to hold the shift key & hit twice for either of them. When doing so,
it shows *twice* "" for open & close quotes & also twice for single quotes:
''

How can be this be fixed. Looked at Control Panel | keyboard & didn't find
a solution. Problem occurred when I installed ASCII characters in Spanish.

Sounds to me as if you have problems with your keyboard. Getting two
characters when I hit a key twice is what I would expect. Check that you
don't have debris obstructing/under some of the keys. Perhaps turn the
keyboard over and give it a shake or tap.

Shook & tapped it. Some debris came off, yet the problem remains. Was
looking at Google before posting this issue and there appears to be reasons
while people try to do away with quotes. Could not find how to get it back
to normal operation.
Appreciate your response & will keep looking.

I don't have an ME box to check this but I think what you are
experiencing can happen if you are using the International Keyboard with
certain languages. The purpose of the "feature" is to allow to type
accents, carets, etc. Check the keyboard settings.

You are right John, I just changed the keyboard setting from English
International to just plain English. Logged off, tried it and now
everything is working fine.

I see that JJ has now provided you with the answer. If you switch back to
the International Keyboard and instead of typing "" you type "e I think
you will find that you get an e with an umlaut over it (ë). Similarly
typing a ' followed by an e, that is 'e will give you an e with an acute
accent (é) . In other words the keyboard driver pauses when certain
characters are typed and depending on the character that follows either
"builds" an accented character or, if the second character isn't one of
the character pairs that do this, then prints both the characters.

Mike, you are correct about the special characters. However, I prefer to
use the ASCII Spanish & French characters using the ALT key followed by
their corresponding numbers, i.e., ALT 164 = ñ ... ALT 168 = ¿
ALT 130 = é...and so on.

As do I which is why I never use the International English keyboard. I'm
not sure that what follows is true of the US keyboard driver but the right
hand Alt key with the UK keyboard driver is known as Alt Gr and can also
be used in combination with a letter to produce acute accents. Alt Gr has
much the same but not always identical effect as Alt+Ctrl where for
example Alt-Ctrl+e = é as does AltGr + e. Another is Alt Gr + 4 which on a
UK keyboard gives the Euro currency symbol €.
